International exchange programs and their achievements
Each of Kitasato University's departments actively engage in international exchange programs, and their educational and research activities are spreading around the world.
International exchange programs within each department
School of Pharmacy
(1) Academic exchange program with the University of Kentucky
The Kitasato University School of Pharmacy concluded an international academic exchange agreement with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1989, and the two universities have participated in exchange programs ever since. We offer a two-week study abroad course to interested sixth-year students. Participants learn about the realities of American healthcare and the work American pharmacists perform through tours of University of Kentucky hospitals and local pharmacies as well as through experiencing the work of clinical pharmacists during team rounds and at conferences. Prior to the course, University of Kentucky clinical faculty members hold lectures and seminars in English at Kitasato University. Kitasato University has also begun conducting courses for University of Kentucky students in Japan in the spirit of mutual exchange.
(2) Academic exchange program with the University of Iowa
The Kitasato University School of Pharmacy conducts a two-week training program at the University of Iowa for interested sixth-year students. Participants attend lectures on the American healthcare system and pharmacotherapeutics. They also “shadow” a sixth-year student in the College of Pharmacy receiving clinical training for a day at University of Iowa hospitals near the university and area pharmacies, and join medical team rounds. Filled with opportunities for learning, the program gives participants the chance to experience American medical care as it is practiced in real life. Prior to the start of the program, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy clinical faculty members come to Kitasato University to give lessons in English for fourth- and fifth-year students in the School of Pharmacy. In 2015, Kitasato University begun to accept University of Iowa College of Pharmacy students for a training program in Japan, establishing a truly mutual exchange between the two universities.
(3) Academic exchange program with Harvard University
Our Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Biostatistics Course initiated an academic exchange program with the Department of Biostatistics in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in January 2000 as a way of enhancing its own education and research. This program provides students with valuable opportunities and knowledge; Harvard University faculty members conduct lectures at Kitasato University, and our graduate students also have the chance to visit and attend lectures at Harvard University.
(4) Academic exchange program with Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Based on the close relationship of friendship and trust between the two schools, Kitasato University’s School of Pharmacy and School of Medicine and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) are launching an academic exchange program designed to foster medical and pharmacological education and research on the leading edge of 21st-century medicine and pharmacology.
The dean of NTNU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and other key NTNU personnel came to Japan for an academic seminar at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo entitled “NTNU and Kitasato University—Collaboration for Future.” We plan to conduct various faculty, staff and student exchanges.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
(1) Short-term study abroad language program
The Kitasato University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has run a short-term study abroad language program since 2014. Students participate in a three-week homestay from February to March just prior to completing their first year of university education. The program is designed to prepare students for studying English in their major as well as studying abroad from the second year onward. It reinforces basic conversational abilities and provides them with language abilities related to their major. The program also deepens participants’ international understanding and allows them to engage in a variety of experiences not possible in Japan.
The University of New England in Australia was selected as the destination for the spring 2017 program. (The program was previously conducted at Northern Illinois University and the Florida Institute of Technology in the U.S.) The University of New England is in the beautiful city of Armidale, about a one-hour flight from Sydney. Class content covered general conversation, communication strategies, vocabulary and grammar. Students also chose a research topic and practiced giving presentations in English. They visited undergraduate departments and facilities at the University of New England, and went on trips to the sea, a zoo and multiple cultural facilities. Students were able to meet koalas, kangaroos and other animals, and experience the vast natural beauty of Australia. The homestay families they stayed with had cats and dogs and occasionally sheep and cows as well. On the last weekend before returning to Japan, the students enjoyed sightseeing and shopping in Sydney, one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities.
