About Kitasato University

President's Message

Moving Life Science into the Future through the Training of Specialists

Kitasato University, consisting of seven schools, is one of the principal private universities in Japan devoted to the comprehensive study of the Life Sciences. This is the result of the pioneering spirit of the University’s founder and a philosophy based on free and independent thought. It is the fruition of the tireless efforts of the present staff, students, and alumni building on this legacy. We cannot but honor the work of our forebears, particularly that of our founding father, Shibasaburo Kitasato. Our four guiding principles are the spirit of pioneering; the spirit of thankfulness; the spirit of wisdom and practice; the spirit of tenacity; all of which were embodied in the work and character of Dr. Kitasato. It is these unwavering principles that have enabled the University to foster and maintain an integrated system of education. It is our intent to continue to adhere to these founding principles and contribute to society in the field of practical medicine.

Education at the University can be characterized as follows: interprofessional medical education via medical facilities affiliated with attached schools as well as three hospitals; research and education in agromedicine, focusing on food, environment, and health; research and education in infection control, which has a history leading back to the foundation of The Kitasato Institute; research and education into intellectual properties in the field of medical engineering; and research and education in Oriental medicine, which has long played a central role in Japanese medicine. Interdepartmental education and integrated research projects are unique to Kitasato. Responding to social needs, we are also making positive steps toward internationalization and the systemization of internal quality control.

Thanks to Dr. Satoshi ?mura’s winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the University has rapidly gained international recognition. We wish to make even more widely known the name of Kitasato as the home of Life Sciences and to attract and produce ever more superlative teaching staffs and students. With the motto of Dr. Kitasato engraved in our hearts—“Remain true to your ideals”—we intend to move steadily forward as a comprehensive university dedicated to the Life Sciences.

The Apogee of Life Sciences and Medicine

Kitasato University proactively responds to the urgent need for Life Science research that is cuttingedge, interdisciplinary and comprehensive, as well as the need for the training of leaders in this research.
